Planning for my Final Major Project

On this page I will be showcasing the planning stages of different parts of this project such as inspiration, techniques and many more.

Directors and their signature techniques:

Within the film industry, there are lots of directors who are all extremely talented and unique. most directors have 'signature techniques'. These are particular things that the director does really well and is basically known for.

Edgar Wright

Edgar is a very well known English film director who has his own signature technique which can be seen within lots of his work. The main examples would consist off, 'Hot Fuzz', 'Baby Driver' and 'Scott Pilgrim VS The World'.  The unique technique that is is known for would be how well made his Fast-Cut Action Montages are. These prove to become very iconic and memorable and therefore have a lot of work put into them. His may be seen as better than the rest as he is amazing when it comes to matching the energy and theme of the scene. For example, the music choice and speed of everything always works together very well which really does help to make it more suspenseful for the audience.

Steven Spielberg

Arguably the most famous film director in the world, Steven Spielbergs work portfolio is one of a kind as he has worked on countless iconic and well known films. Some examples include the likes of 'E.T', 'Jurassic Park', 'Jaws' and many more. Among all of his work, he is well known for his God Lighting as it always matches the scene and just creates a very memorable scene for the audience. The best example would be from 'E.T', where the bike glides across the moon which is still to this day one of the most iconic scenes ever. Overall, the lighting in his films are always used well and done to perfection as they help either show something key happening or help to show a character or movement whilst keeping the dark and mysterious vibe.

Wes Anderson

Wes Anderson is another extremely famous director who has their own signature technique which can be seen in the majority of their work such as 'Grand Budapest Hotel', 'Isle Of Dogs', and 'Moonrise Kingdom'. The main technique he is known for would be his symmetrical framing. These get a lot of attention as symmetrical shots are very visually pleasing to the audience and they are also extremely hard to master.

Inspiration

Konstantin

Konstantin is a YouTube director and editor who uploads videos of how he creates well made and professional product videos sometimes all homemade and sometimes using a high end studio. He specialises in product specific videos as he uses unique and visually pleasing effects to show off a product to appeal to the customer. His videos usually follow a very fun and creative theme which could attract a younger audience as they its filled with bright colours and big pictures.

Within this video, he documents how he is able to create a short but very effective and professional advert for Doritos all while staying at home with his own equipment. He begins to show off different techniques and shots that will create a great effect in the post production stage/ while editing. This whole video will be great inspiration to me as it will allow me to use some of his advise and techniques in order for me to produce the best possible video of my own.

YouTube Video

Despite not knowing the director of this video, I can tell this is a very talented person as this video is exactly like the same style I would love to try and adapt for my own video. This video is full of smooth, clean transitions that all work well together to help show off the product and process.

This video is different to the one before as it is only the final video and therefore we are not able to see how he filmed this all. However, they are still similar in structure. For example, all the videos show the steps and build up of the final product which helps to keep the audience watching as they want to see how it ends up looking.

Daniel Schiffer

Daniel Schiffer is a very well known YouTube director who also produces incredible short videos for products or companies. Because of the quality and effort he puts in, He is able to gain millions of views and likes for his work which just shows how creative and unique they are. He is definitely  some inspiration for this project as all of his videos are amazing and keep you intrigued the whole time.

This video is almost a combination of the last two videos as not only does he show you the longer final video, but he also talks through how he does it. He also shows the process in creating the final video all whilst making anything they do look a lot better thanks to his talent.

Analysis

Symbolic and technical codes: After watching the three videos in more detail it is clear to me that I would like to use all three of them as inspiration as they all have similar yet unique techniques including their symbolic and technical codes. For example, they all use great camera movement to show off even little things and then make it look amazing for the audience. The symbolic codes are different in the first video compared to the second. An example would be the set and theme they have gone for. In the first one, there is more of a colourful and more childish theme shown by the fast explosive editing and also the stand out bright colours to help attract Dorito's younger audience. Compared to the other two however, there is a more serious and more mature theme as obviously one of them is alcohol and therefore needs to attract to an older audience. This does not affect the final video too much as the whole point of a product video is to attract the target audience and make them want to buy the object you are recording. Another key part included in almost every product video I have watched, are quick fast edits. These make the video feel quick and get the job done quickly without boring the audience whilst also maintaining the same quality in what they are showing, making sure they can still clearly see everything that is happening.

Content and narrative: In all product videos, there is an ongoing theme of a similar narrative and content. For example, when recording a video based around food or drink, the content will include a narrative of the director showing the process of creating the final product as shown in the last two videos linked above. These are done well as although it might not be the most exiting thing, they are still able to show it off well without boring the audience through the use of quick fast paced shots/ edits. On the other hand, with videos based around a product that doesn't need a build up for, such as the Doritos, the director can basically free roam and take the video in whatever direction they want as all they have to do is show off the final product. These tend to be shorter videos as there is not as much to show off and usually tend to rely on some unique edits or some corny storyline as shown in almost every fragrance advert.

My Style: After analysing the three videos, I have picked up on some things that I am definitely  going to follow such as the quick edits, the more mature theme to match the same theme, and also the build up to show the audience how its made. All these components help to make the best advert possible as it informs the audience but also manages to keep it short and interesting for them too.

Content Evaluation

In conclusion, I have gained a lot of valuable information on the genre and style of content I aim to produce. I have researched different shots, different techniques for specific shots, different themes to match the same sort of vibe and much more. Also, I have done research into the actual drinks I plan to make and therefore the ingredients and where I can buy all of the products from. I done all this by using the internet for the ingredients and also by using a cocktail specific book we have.

Research Evaluation

With the whole research side of things, I believe I researched everything very well as I was able to plan ahead completely to make sure I had everything I needed in order for the filming days to run smoothly. The part that helped me most would have been the 'Konstantin' video as it helped give me ideas on product videos and techniques in general.
